Jim Croce，這位出身於美國賓州費城的歌手，大學時就在社團擔任歌手，也曾組樂團隨處演唱。1966，Jim Croce與也是歌手的Ingrid Jacobson結婚，父母親給了他500美元作為禮金，明知道他會將之用於發行個人專輯，而想說這樣也好，讓他嘗受到失敗之後，才會安心的從事所學專業的工作。豈知Jim Croce的這張專輯《Facets》，所壓製的500張唱片竟然全數賣光，也使得他對歌唱事業益加熱衷。

1968年，Jim Croce偕同妻子搬至紐約，錄製他們在Capitol唱片公司的第一張專輯。之後兩年，這對夫妻開車超過30萬英哩，到小酒館、學校的演唱會等場合，到處去演唱宣傳他們的專輯，可惜對他們的歌唱事業仍無起色。灰心之下，將所有的家當變賣，只留下了一把吉他搬回費城。

回到費城，Jim Croce一度擔任卡車司機及建築工人以維持生計，但仍繼續從事歌曲的創作。1970，Croce經由曾為同學的製作人介紹，和同為歌手及歌曲作家的Maury Muehleisn組成拍檔，1972年發行了兩張專輯，其中有多首熱門曲，包含之前介紹過的《Operator》以及冠軍曲《Bad, Bad Leroy Brown》等。此時，Jim Croce的歌唱事業開始起飛。

1973年9月，在發行了《I Got a Name》專輯才一週，也是接著發行此首同名單曲的第二天，Jim Croce從路易斯安那州搭租賃包機赴德州趕場，由於駕駛員不慎，起飛高度不夠，飛機掃到跑道盡頭附近的一棵胡桃樹，因而墬機，同機7人均罹難身亡。此時Jim Croce才30歲，而他的搭擋Maury Muehleisn更年輕，才24歲。

其實Jim Croce在巡迴宣傳演唱時，因想家而有倦勤之意。他寫信告訴妻子，想退出音樂圈而專注於寫些短篇小說及電影劇本，以離開目前拋頭露面的生活方式。而這封信在他死後才被妻子收到。

這首《I Got A Name》是少數非由Jim Croce自己所作的歌，但他覺得歌詞內容就像是在說他，故也非常的喜歡。有許多人大概也如歌詞所述：活在父親隱藏的夢想中 ( livin' the dream that he kept hid )。但歌曲也鼓勵---勇敢的走自己喜歡的路吧！
