此曲為Crazy Horse ( 瘋馬 ) 樂團的旋律吉他手兼主唱Danny Whitten所寫，Crazy Horse最知名是做為加拿大歌手Neil Young的專屬樂隊，卻也有獨自發展的實力，在1971發行了首張與樂團同名的專輯，此曲即收錄其中，單曲雖市場反應平平，而樂評們則普遍給予好評。

1975，英國歌手Rod Stewart翻唱此曲，收錄在專輯《Atlantic Crossing》中，當時並未發行單曲。1976年底，Rod Stewart在倫敦的演唱會演唱此曲，當唱至副歌時，全場觀眾與之大合唱至結束，此反應之熱烈，不僅Stewart自己大吃一驚，也驚動了唱片公司的高層，而決定將此曲另發行單曲。但該時Stewart的另張新專輯《Night on The Town》已經發行，只得從該專輯中選出一首《The First Cut Is The Deepest》放在B面，號稱是雙A面發行。

Stewart的翻唱版於1977年6月初登上英國排行榜的冠軍，但被指是「操縱」的結果。由於6月7日是英女王伊麗莎白二世登基25週年的紀念慶典，而當時各媒體自辦的排行榜冠軍均是Sex Pistol ( 性手槍 ) 樂團的《God Save The Queen》( 歌曲內容是嘲諷英國的君主世襲制度 )，《I Don't Want to Talk About It》之所以登上榜首，被認為是為了顧及英國王室的顏面的政治力介入。

Danny Whitten在寫此曲的同時，即以為解除類風濕性關節炎的疼痛而吸毒成癮。1972，此曲發行的次年底，Whitten即以服用藥物和酒精過量而死亡，僅享年29歲。倘他知道此曲後來會爆紅，或許會有不一樣的人生吧！

這是一首動人的歌曲，講述了一個男人傷心欲絕，不願談論自己的痛苦，要求他的愛人只是傾聽他的心聲的故事。翻唱此曲的歌手包含有英國Everything But The Girl二人組( UK #3 )、Rita Coolidge、台灣歌手王傑、張惠妹等。
