此曲為美國鄉村男歌手Justin Tubb所寫，收錄於其1962的專輯《Star of the Grand Ole Opry》中。1976，鄉村女歌手Sammi Smith翻唱此曲，唯將原歌詞的第一人稱改為第三人稱，同名專輯及單曲均獲得鄉村榜第43名。

Sammi Smith於11歲時就在夜總會演唱，15歲時嫁給了頗為知名的鋼線吉他手，生了3個孩子後於1966離婚。1967被Johnny Cash的貝士手發掘，並搬遷去了Nashville，再經Johnny Cash的推薦簽進了Columbia唱片公司，1967~1969發行了幾首單曲，雖大多都入榜但成績普普。而人的運氣來時，真的是城牆也擋不住。1970，Sammi翻唱Kris Kristofferson的《Help Me Make It Through the Night》，一舉拿下鄉村榜的冠軍及流行榜的第8名，為自己及Kristofferson各贏得了一座葛萊美獎。

Sammi成名後開始和Waylon Jennings、Willie Nelson走得很近，成為少數「非法鄉村」流派的女性，但未能再有亮眼的佳績表現。2005，因肺氣種過世，享年61歲。Sammi Smith與唱紅《Single Girl》Sandy Posey，倆人不僅歌路有些類似，遭遇也頗相同，後人記得的大概也只有一首讓她們成名的招牌歌了。
