此曲為美國鄉村音樂藝人Tom T. Hall所寫，最早出現於他1969的專輯《Ballad of Forty Dollars & His Other Great Songs》中，之後被廣泛的翻唱，其中較知名的歌手有Bobby Bare ( 1970 )、Deryl Dodd ( 1996 ) 及Charley Crocktee ( 2018 ) 等。

Tom T. Hall是位歌手兼詞曲作家，也擅長寫短篇小說，因此也有個非正式的綽號「the Storyteller」。Hall共寫過12首的冠軍歌曲，其中最著名的是1968由Jennie C. Riley唱紅的《Harper Valley PTA》。Hall的妻子Dixie也是位鄉村藍草音樂的作家，夫妻倆自2002至2015共獲得12年(座)「美國藍草音樂保護協會」年度的最佳藍草歌曲作者獎。2015結縭47年的妻子Dixie過世，想來對Hall的生活及心情造成了影響，2021，85歲的Hall在家中過世，一直被認為是自然死亡，直到法醫公佈了調查結果，為舉槍轟頭身亡 ( 尊重生命，請撥打1995。)。

以下所貼為Bobby Bare 1970的版本，獲得告示牌鄉村榜的第3名，有未署名的評論說「此曲為Hall的有力素材，是Bare最出色的表演之一。」歌曲講述一個男子到孟菲斯尋找昔日情人的故事，以Bobby Bare最知名的歌曲《Detroit City》和《500 Miles Away from Home》來看，他真的還滿適合這類題材的。
