Sonny Curtis和Buddy Holly從青少年時即是朋友，並一起玩吉他闖蕩歌壇。可是，當Buddy Holly在1957組The Crickets樂團時，Sonny Curtis認為自己有其他的發展而未加入。1959，Buddy Holly不幸墜機身亡 ( The Day the Music Died ) 後 ，Sonny Curtis才成為The Crickets樂團的成員。而此首《I Fought The Law》即為Sonny Curtis所作，並於1960由The Crickets首唱發行。遺憾的是，此曲卻是在1966被The Bobby Fuller Four樂團給唱紅。

The Bobby Fuller Four樂團成立於1962，靈魂人物當然就是Bobby Fuller，雖然該團陸續出了一些單曲，但成績平平，直到1965年底翻唱這首《I Fought The Law》，除了在告示牌拿下第9名的佳績，也才真正擠身成為「國際」級的樂團。這時的Bobby Fuller可說是當紅的炸子雞，但令人震驚的是，才沒幾個月 ( July / 1966 )，Bobby Fuller被發現窒息死於他位於加州公寓前母親的車內，才23歲。

死亡現場的情況是，Bobby Fuller趴臥在前座，身上有些瘀傷和出血，身旁還有個小型的汽油桶，身上也有些汽油浸濕。根據警方調查及驗屍，認為這是一起自殺或意外，但由於汽油桶上無任何指紋，Bobby Fuller之前也無自殺的徵兆，許多人相信這是一起謀殺案。

由於是無來由的死亡，有些人認為可能是連續殺人狂魔Charles Manson和他的家族所為。其實當天Bobby Fuller接到一通電話後即開著他母親的車外出，極有可能是去參加轟趴並服用過多的迷幻藥LSD而暴斃，然後被送回家並故佈疑陣。2015出版的《I Fought the Law: The Life and Strange Death of Bobby Fuller》，書的作者和Randy Fuller ( Bobby Fuller的弟弟，當時為The Bobby Fuller Four樂團的貝士手 ) 提出了一個新的推論，認為Bobby Fuller的死，和Roulette唱片公司的老闆Morris Levy有牽連，因當時Bobby Fuller所屬的唱片公司欲將經銷權簽給Roulette公司，但Bobby Fuller不願意，甚至想退出單飛。而Morris Levy背後和黑手黨有著深厚的關係。( Morris Levy號稱音樂界的教父，曾因敲詐勒索被判刑，1990死於肝癌，62歲。)


連續犯下9起謀殺案的狂魔Charles Manson (2014)，仍在獄中服無期徒刑。



Bobby Fuller的死因的確離奇，至今仍有人為此爭辯。而若是發生在現今，一大堆的環境監視器及DNA檢測，恐怕早已真相大白了吧！
