Simon & Kathy

人生的際遇很奇妙，當然，這其中也包含了愛情。

Paul Simon ( 保羅賽門 ) 在1964年和Art Garfunkel ( 亞特葛芬柯 ) 錄完了他們的第一張專輯《Wednesday Morning , 3 AM.》後，一個人去到了英國，準備在那裡追尋個人音樂事業的夢想。當時是在一間早期的民謠俱樂部 ( Railway Inn ) 演唱，因此認識了當時在俱樂部打工賣票的17歲女孩Kathy Chitty，倆人也很快地墜入了情網。就在同年底，倆人還一起去美國旅遊，但Chitty卻先Simon數星期返英 ( 倆人鬧意見？或是Simon有事牽絆？)。返回倫敦後，Simon還錄製了《The Paul Simon Songbook》專輯，其中不僅有一首《Kathy's Song》，且以倆人的相片作為專輯的封面。

其實Simon & Garfunkel的第一張專輯算是失敗的作品，也沒有什麼電台願意播放。之後唱片製作人擅自決定將其中的《The Sound of Silence》，以電吉他、電貝士及鼓加重音效的重新混音，竟然因此在1966年的元旦奪得了排行榜的冠軍。對Simon & Garfunkel來說，雖屬意外，而事實就是一夕爆紅。

據說Kathy是個十分害羞的女孩，不願因Simon的成名也使得她成為眾人目光的焦點。而此時的Simon意識到他不得不返回美國繼續衝刺他的歌唱事業，倆人也就因此分手。

這首《Homeward Bound / 歸途》是Paul Simon在英國Widnes火車站等車時寫的，一般咸信，這首歌是在描述Simon想趕快回家，回到女友Kathy身邊的心情。此曲於1966獲得美國排行榜第5名，也是Simon & Garfunkel膾炙人口的熱門曲之一。

附記：Kathy Chitty已婚並育有三名子女，目前仍在威爾斯的鄉村小鎮平靜的生活。
