英國籍男子Norman Smith原是位錄音室工程師，1962-1965，幾乎所有Beatles ( 披頭合唱團 ) 的歌曲都是由他協助錄製，或因而和John Lennon熟識，是John先替Norman取了個“Normal”的綽號，主要是因為Norman的個性從容不迫、不易慌亂，也有自然的親切感。之後，披頭的其他團員也跟著叫Norman此綽號。

Norman Smith後來受到公司賞識，也讓他當起了唱片的製作人。此首《Don't Let It Die》是Norman之前就寫好的，也錄好了Demo帶，本期待由John Lennon來唱，自己擔任合音。但另位製作人Mickie Most建議他，何不由自己來發行？當時Norman的年紀已快要邁向50大關，也想在音樂事業上做些新的嘗試和突破，就在1971以Hurricane Smith的藝名發行此曲，竟一舉奪下英國單曲排行榜的第2名，並獲得該年最佳詞曲的Ivor Novello獎。Norman也自此展開了他的歌唱之途。

這是一首關於生態保育的歌曲。事後Norman問John Lennon是否喜歡此曲？John回說喜歡到會想去錄唱，假使當時就問他的話。至於以下所貼John Lennon的版本，是何時及在何情況下錄製的，一時尚未查到資料。
