Speaking of traveling, I have to say that I worry a lot,
so I always have plans before I travel.
But, having a plan does not mean you can't enjoy or get crazy about it
(you just need to be careful, that's the most important policy)

I've post my trip to Alaska before, and that year (2011) is the craziest year that I have !

(Cody)

The story starts from my second W&T in USA
I worked in Wyoming (best known for Yellowstone National Park)
so I got my ticket like this:

TPE>COD (WY)
LAX>TPE

I only planed on going to LA for couple days since I missed a lot in my first visit in 2009
I didn't plan on traveling longer than 3 days

Then, I got in touch with my cousin in Vancouver
he told me I can stay at his place, and he can pick me up in Seattle ...
that triggered my crazy schedule traveling...

On my way to Alaska

I bought a ticket from Billings, MT to Fairbanks, AK
then from Anchorage, AK to Seattle, WA
I will stay 3 days in Vancouver, then Seattle for 2 nights with my friends,
then fly to LA and stay with my college friend for 2 nights.

(I have articles about all those spots mentioned above, so I am gonna
try to tell less in this one)

Alaska is the 49th State of America
and it is the biggest state for USA
(they call it last frontier, cuz there are many spots have no one ever step on it even till now)
The most interesting thing about Alaska to me, is that American bought it from Russia
(according to Wikipedia, it only cost them about 90 millions dollars >>the value was counted in 2003, to get this huge land with valuable natural resources.

(Juneau)
(Anchorage)
(Fairbanks)

Alaska state capital is Juneau,
but the biggest city is Anchorage, there are 1/4 of population of Alaska.
the city I stayed is Fairbanks, the second biggest city of AK (the biggest for the interior state)

Welcome to Fairbanks !!

I knew this city when I was in junior high school
I read a book called "Chasing the Aurora: the Snowy Picture of Fairbanks, Alaska" (this is my translation, it is a Chinese book)
Ever since I read that book, I was totally in love with northern light, and wish
that I could see it one day myself.
I even named myself Aurora (Origin: Roman Mythology, goddess of morning/dawn)

I arrived at Fairbanks International Airport at midnight,
and I had a reservation of a youth hostel,
I decided to view the comment of that hostel, and realized that is a place
you have to share room with guys or girls (just depends).
and even you picked a single room, there is no lock for the locker....
As I said, I worries a lot, and even if I am on my crazy trip,
I have to worry about my own safety, and all my belongs.
I can't feel safe when I go out during the day with my stuffs in the hostel WITHOUT a lock.
So, I canceled it, and booked a Super8 room instead.
Booking for a safer stay

Fairbanks International Airport

4AM, I asked a shuttle from Super8,
then the front desk told me the room I booked online is not available till maybe noon....
So i have to wait in the lobby till housekeeping is done with that room.
and I was like, sure, I'll take a nap in the lobby. I'm too tired to think or argue after a long day.
then there is a guy, middle age, getting coffee at the lobby,
he asked why did I sleep in the lobby.
He thinks the person at the front desk was terrible to ask a guest to do this,
so he argued with him and ask for manager.
In the end, they gave me another room with 2 queen beds, no extra charge, like immediately.

Well, I really don't need two beds

while waiting for the hotel manager, I had a coffee with the guy (Brain),
he told me about northern light, and how they hunt in the woods.
He told me if the hotel can't give me a room any sooner,
I can stay in he and his friends' till I got my room since they are leaving anyway.
BUT, like I said, you have to be careful when you travel alone,
I am not saying that all people are bad, but you just never know.
So I declined, and thankfully, the hotel manager was able to rearrange a room for me.

Brain

after a shower, Brain and his friends knocked on my door and ask me to have breakfast with them at Denny's.
I am pretty sure I will be fine in a public restaurant with lots of hungry people,
and I was starving, so well, why not.
I went to breakfast with them,
talking about how they hunt and eat bears.
That was kinda scary! But Brain and his friends are pretty cool,
and they buy me free breakfast :)
Brain asked me what's my plan for the day, and since their flight is almost at midnight,
they might be able to show me around.

Thus, Brain went to the Museum of the North (in University of Alaska, Fairbanks)
he was gonna go to the Pump House with me for dinner,
but I was still pretty cautious, so I declined again.
I am not sure why he's being so nice to a stranger,
but I sure do thank him A LOT for helping me started my first day in Alaska with a happy mood.

Thanks Brain !

next day, I went to North Pole (not the one in the Arctic Circle)
and spent half day in Santa Claus House...
and sadly, I had my dinner from Walmart.
cuz I gotta get up early next morning so I can take my winter train
(the train takes 12 hours, from Fairbanks to Anchorage)
Photo: 聖誕老人屋 where you can find lots of X'mas deco

I thought it will be INSIDE of the Arctic Circle

(it was quite expensive for the Winter Train ticket,
i think it was like 150 USD)
but you can see the nature scenery along the way,
and they stop whenever they want,
especially when there is wildlife in sight.
They also deliver stuffs like newspapers to some tiny village on the way,
pretty cool to me, I have to give them that.

this is only 1/3 of my crazy trip
and then I was in Vancouver, Canada.

since my cousin had to work,
I need to find a way to go places by myself.
Good thing of a international big city: Public Transportation
plus, there are tons of Asian, so you can see Chinese in many places~~

(Stanley Park)

I went to Stanley Park first,
it was huge....it took me half day to just walk around the shore side
and there are many surprises~
I saw a weird looking fish...
and raccoon!
(my cousin hates them, he caught one in his garbage once)

Photo: 浣熊看起來沒睡飽 he was right in front of me, I was worried...

(University of British Columbia)

then I went to UBC,
I wished I could study there !!
and they have their own beach, how cool is that !
I didn't go the the museum of anthropology in UBC cuz I don't have enough Canadian dollars
(what a shame)
and I got off at the wrong bus stop, so I didn't have enough time to go to Roots outlet
(another sad thing of the day)

I made it there by taking a bus

Photo: 校園裡的玫瑰園 this rose garden is so beautiful! Let's have a British tea !!

and since my cousin couldn't take me to Seattle,
I had to take bus from a casino in Vancouver.
that was amazing they have this kind of service
(I guess they make more money if American want to go gambling)
and it was a new experience for me to go through customs and baggage check,
pretty much on a highway !

Yes, you will see Chinese signs in Van City

Photo: 下客運等通關 waiting for the customs

the bus I took takes me to downtown Seattle,
I took off right across the street of Space Needle!

Hello, Space Needle

one of the girl I met when working is from Seattle,
so me, her, and 2 more Taiwanese partners from W&T went to
have dinner at Space Needle.
yeah, it was expensive, but you don't have to pay for the elevator,
or the observatory. Besides, you have 360 view when having not too bad food.

Photo: 旋轉餐廳緩慢旋轉中 it rotates really slow... but you can feel it.

Visit at dusk is perfect, you can have night view as well

Photo: 點亮後的太空針塔 thought it would have some cool colors

and you just can't miss Pike Place Market (the first Starbucks)
and there are a lot of people have same thought (mostly Asian)
each one of them (us) had to at least buy a cup or something before we leave.

Photo: 不可錯過之派克市場 just can't miss it

See, this is the FIRST Starbucks

we didn't miss the outlet (how could we?),
it took almost all day.
NEVER shop together girls... it's like a non-stop craziness

the morning before we leave Seattle,
we had an car accident at gas station.
the (nice) guy said he had to call the police, that's the insurance company's request,
but then when the police officer came and realize we're cool with each other,
he wondered why did we even bother to call him...

I can be a pirate

Photo: 蜘蛛人~ why aren't you on the wall??

I am your Minnie today :)

Finally, my crazy schedule got to the last city--Los Angeles
great thanks to my friend Anny and her friends from USC,
they picked up me and my friend from the airport,
took us to great Chinese dinner, save us from downtown LA after dark,
(and told us we were crazy cuz it's dangerous to stay in downtown area),
took us to four beaches in one afternoon and dine in a great restaurant,
showed up great bar in town (at rooftop and that one was awesome!),
(DO NOT DRINK if you are not legally old enough)
Photo: 謝安妮姊~ Thank you, hot chic

Photo: 池畔吧 I like this but it was too cold

I forgot everything when I woke up in my friend's room next morning.
I know I was safe though cuz she didn't drink at all.

the worst part in a trip is definitely taking plane when you are hangover...
(and listen to your friends making fun of what happened when u were drunk)
THANKS for Anny's friend AGAIN for taking us to the airport.

and of course, the flight delayed.
for 2 hours!!!
so when we got the Tokyo, the flight to Taipei was GONE.
and we have to stay in Japan for one night (glad it was free).
but we were too tired to go anywhere in Tokyo (a shame)

At least it was free

Crazy traveling project ends after one night in Japan...

I am pretty sure the mileage I had for that week is probably plenty enough to get a domestic ticket....

I flew from Taiwan to Wyoming,
Montana to Alaska, Seattle, Los Angeles, Tokyo then back to Taiwan
even though I missed a lot on the trip (and am still feel bad about it)
I am glad I bought the ticket to Alaska.
for I was crazy enough to make that decision,
so I had lots of good memories from that trip.

I would probably never go to Alaska by myself if I wasn't bold enough.
and that crazy idea actually turned out to be a great experience.

Golden Heart Plaza post have to add TAIPEI CITY on this post !!

Yes, you are allow to do this, and it is legal and safe,
because this is a real slow train for you to enjoy the view !

I really want to get crazy and go somewhere I've been wanted to go for a long time,
I want to go like tomorrow !!!

I am proud of myself for making that decision !
