成立於1977的英國搖滾樂團Dire Straits ( 險峻海峽 )，之所以會取此團名，是因樂團之前只是在當地的酒吧和咖啡館作些小型演出，收入只勉強夠維持開支和供樂團泡吧。故改名為「Dire Straits」，以自嘲當時的「困窘」。( Dire Straits亦有困境之意 )

1980年Dire Straits以一首《Sultans of Swing》獲得葛萊美獎兩項提名，雖未得獎，但樂團聲勢大振。1985發行的第五張專輯《Brothers in Arms》，更是將樂團推上了巔峰，除在英美排行榜各蟬聯10和9週的冠軍，全球的唱片銷售量更達3000萬張。而專輯中的這首《Walk Of Life》，雖然在美國排行榜只獲得第7名，卻是Dire Straits在英國銷售成績最佳的單曲。

這首歌描述的是一位街頭藝人在行人地下道中唱歌。《Walk Of Life》有被譯為「漫步人生」，也有譯作「人生百態」或是「生活之路」、「生命之旅」。Whatever，大概就是這位街頭藝人的「走唱人生」吧！
