In conversation with BBC Radio 6 last night, immortal Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page revealed that he’s got some new music on the way. “Very very soon,” the string slinger said, later specifying that it will come out sometime this year, although it hasn’t been recorded yet. And whatever it is, it won’t be what people expect. “It won’t be just teaming up with lots of people who are just names. I’ve got an idea of something which I’ve had for a long time and now’s the time to do it.”

The conversation occurred after Page’s induction into Mojo Magazine’s Hall Of Fame in London. He describes the new material as a variety of projects that he’s hoping to pull together. “I’m just looking forward to making some music and surprising people with it,” Page said. “It will be quite an interesting menu of music.” He’s remaining tight-lipped on the specifics, however, modestly seeking to avoid too much of a flurry of expectation. “If [people] know too much up front, it can be really disappointing. I’ve seen that happen on a number of occasions, so i’d rather keep what I’m doing very quiet. It seems to be the best way to go about things.”

The closest thing the BBC managed to get out of Page by way of description was his statement, “I think the way to present music is ’same picture different frame,’ and sometimes this frame is quite radical, and that’s what I’m going to do.” With Robert Plant’s mighty collaboration with Alison Krauss and John Paul Jones’ rockin’ for the youngsters with Dave Grohl in Them Crooked Vultures, it’s high time Mr. Page gave us something worthwhile to chew on, and who knows what this “radical” new frame could be? It could be techno. It could be Joanna Newsom. It could be friggin’ Lady Gaga, you never know. We’ll have to wait and see.
