HK114 Four months in HK

I finally started getting to like Hong Kong after 3 months.

What made my impression change?

First is Repulse Bay. I went there with Marie and Fannie (my high school friends) and only realized that Hong Kong has such a big nice beach when I stepped off the bus. It was not crowded (very important) and very relaxing. You can do sun baking, water sporting, beach vollay ball, and feeling your feet in the sand.

It was a little hot when we were there, and I’ve been trying to find a chance to go again with Chang. Finally decided to go on last weekend, but didn’t get to go because the air pollution in Hong Kong was SO BAD that we had to cancel the trip to protect ourselves. So I’m still anticipating my next time there.

(picture below: Repulse Bay, of course)
Second is the new cable car that just started in September. Highly recommended if you are a tourist. Very convenient to get there, and it takes you to the big Buddha (instead of taking 45 minutes bus, the cable car is only 20-25 minutes ride and has great view to the airport, the islands, and the mountains).

I took it when my mom and aunt were here. That was one of the windy days in the Golden Week, and we were in one of the cars that were hanging there for extra 20 minutes without noticing. On the way back the wind was so strong that I felt like in a rollercoaster. Seriously, I was screaming. But it was fun.

The third thing is NOHO! Most people know Soho but never heard of Noho. Soho is South of Hollywood road and Noho is North of Hollywood road. Like Soho, Noho is full of restaurants. The difference is, however, that those restaurants in Noho are more cozy and less pricy! Restaurants there are smaller, less seat arrangement, more room for people, not scqueezing strangers into one same table. Price per dish is around HKD50-70 and food is decent. In a word, they are more ”normal”.

I guess that’s all you can ask in Hong Kong. Just a little more room and a little less rush. Somehow that already made me a lot happier.

ps. A lot of people asked me ”how do you like Hong Kong” and when I said ”hmm I actually don’t like it”, I remember how shocked they were even they tried not to show. Those are foreigners and local people. I guess only Taiwanese would agree with me that Hong Kong is not an enjoyable place.

ps2. OK, it’s just me. I know lots of people who love Hong Kong so don’t let me mislead you. I would still encourage anyone to come work in Hong Kong for a couple of years because $1) the salary is good $2) the Gucci here is cheaper $3) you can save more money. and for me, of course there is another important incentive and I’ll just be here no matter what.
