Worth Seeing But Keep an Open Mind

"Funny People" is a movie well worth seeing but go in with an open mind. Adam Sandler attempts to portray a high profile comedian who is possibly dying of a rare and often fatal blood disorder. I say "attempts" because the role requires more of Sandler than he is able to give ...He's not bad, he's just not good. Seth Rogen is excellent in a less demanding role as are Judd Apatow's other ensemble characters...

Some reviewer will tell you it's not a funny movie but rather a movie about funny people,aka comedians ...this it does well in that they are portrayed as insecure, narcissistic, self absorbed ...I could go on but you get the picture (no pun intended). Eric Bana is wasted in a small role as the spouse of Adam Sandler's long lost love. He's a real jerk with an over the top Australian accent (I know he's Australian but he lays it on thick for the benefit of the Yanks in the audience.) While he's a jerk, he's less of a jerk than Adam Sandler... at the conclusion this is made clear as their mutual love interest picks Bana over Sandler... she clearly realizes that the jerk you know is better than the jerk you don't know...

While some may view my comments as harsh, this is a form of popular entertainment, no more, no less. I hope it does well comercially so Judd Apatow will get more opportunities to make interesting films...
