St. Mary’s Hospital in Taitung has taken over a farm operation to provide jobs to locals whose livelihoods were washed away by the floods and mudslides during Typhoon Morakot in August 2009.

The hospital said it has rented the Zhiben Farm from the Executive Yuan’s Veterans Affairs Commission and changed the name to St. Mary’s Health Farm.

After renovations, the farm formally opened over the weekend. The head of St. Mary’s Hospital, Chen Shi-xian, said the 4.3-hectare farm will offer a spot for the public to experience chemical-free, natural farming methods.

After a flag-raising ceremony attended by some 300 veterans and employees from St. Mary’s Hospital on the morning of Jan. 1, the farm officially opened its doors, attracting quite a crowd to its stands featuring healthy foods and a variety of local aboriginal handicrafts.

The farm has been divided into various sections for growing edible sprouts and other vegetables, as well as educational areas. Visitors to the farm can enjoy a wonderful meal, and come to better understand natural and healthy farming methods, he said.

Ninety percent of the workers at the farm are either from disaster areas or from nearby indigenous tribes, Chen said, adding that the food they make is totally from locally grown ingredients. Chen stated that the hospital hopes that the initiative will not only provide jobs, but also will spark the development of related industries.
